Agricultural drone training in the UK

UK agricultural drone training routes, provider questions and compliance checks for people considering commercial farm drone operation.

Training routes

The usual commercial starting point is the General VLOS Certificate, which supports an application for a CAA Operational Authorisation in the Specific category. The lighter A2 Certificate of Competency exists for smaller drones flown closer to people, but it does not cover the heavy application aircraft used in agriculture. For spray and spread drones over 25 kg, training needs to lead towards a bespoke authorisation, not just a basic certificate.

On top of the aviation qualification, manufacturer and application training matters. Flying a heavy drone safely is a different skill from applying a product accurately and legally.

Agricultural knowledge

Farm drone work is not only about flying. Operators need to understand crops, products, application rates, weather windows, drift, records and the expectations of farmers and agronomists. For pesticide work there is also the plant protection and Health and Safety Executive permit picture to understand.

Provider questions

Ask what the course actually covers, whether it includes the aircraft you intend to use, what support exists after training, and whether it prepares you for the work you plan to sell. A General VLOS Certificate on its own does not make you ready to spread or spray commercially.

Next steps

Compare the training directory, speak to equipment providers and map out your likely services before committing to a course. The sensible order is usually services first, then training, then equipment.

FAQs

Is generic drone training enough?

Not for heavy agricultural application work. A General VLOS Certificate is a baseline, but you also need authorisation for drones over 25 kg and application knowledge.

What is the difference between the A2 CofC and the GVC?

The A2 Certificate of Competency covers smaller drones flown near people. The General VLOS Certificate supports Operational Authorisations for the heavier drones used in agriculture.

Can I compare providers here?

Yes. Start with the training directory and verify current course details directly.
