What to ask before hiring a drone operator

A farmer-friendly checklist for checking a UK drone operator's credentials, insurance, permissions, product suitability and written quote.

Credentials

Ask who will actually carry out the work, what qualifications they hold, and whether the business flies under its own CAA Operational Authorisation or through another operator as the operator of record. For heavy application drones, confirm they hold the bespoke authorisation that aircraft over 25 kg require, not just an entry-level permission.

Insurance

Ask for evidence of insurance that matches the specific activity, including any application work, rather than general business cover. The certificate should make sense for the job in front of you.

Product and site suitability

For spraying, spreading or seeding, confirm the product, rate, crop, site conditions, weather limits and records. For any pesticide application, ask how the work is permitted given the aerial spraying rules. A capable operator will explain why a job is suitable, and will tell you when it is not.

Written quote

A useful quote sets out the scope, price, limitations, responsibilities, timing and the information the operator still needs from you. If a quote is a single number with no detail, ask for the breakdown before you commit.

FAQs

Should I check insurance?

Yes. Ask for evidence that matches the proposed work, including any application activity, not just general business cover.

Should I ask for permissions?

Yes. Ask the operator to explain the relevant CAA authorisation and, for pesticide work, the Health and Safety Executive permit position.

How do I compare quotes fairly?

Send each operator the same brief, and compare what is included rather than the headline price.
